Hello everyone, my name is Adriana, and I'm a senior at Florida State University. I'm pursuing a major in psychology and a minor in education to become a neuropsychologist in the future. I was raised in the Republic of Panama, so Spanish is my first language, but a year ago, I moved to the U.S. to finish my bachelor's degree.
As part of my minor, I'm currently taking the course Introduction to Educational Technology. During this course I hope to learn how to use online tools I've never used before, such as Padlet and Blogger. I'm also looking forward to refining my skills using Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, as I have only used their basic features. Even though we will learn how to use different platforms from the lens of being an educator, I can apply what I will learn to my field of interest, psychology. Learning how to design and upload informative materials is a great tool to help spread awareness on psychology-related topics, like the importance of taking care of our mental health.
While in high school, technology was not used very often in the classroom. Electronic devices were only allowed in classes where the teachers had no issue with us typing out our notes. I specifically only had two teachers who wanted us to use several online platforms. My history teacher used to assign a series of group activities where we could use Canva to design mind maps and timelines. In addition, my literature teacher used online tools to make the class more dynamic with online anonymous discussions and used Nearpod for making quizzes and activities throughout the lectures. However, we were never taught how to properly use these platforms, so the technology proficiency was not the same for all students.
I really enjoy learning about psychology. Throughout the years my university professors have been a great support system to help me learn through lectures and exams. The research lab I’m part of has also been a great space to interact and learn from Ph.D students who once were in the same place as me. As for online spaces, Canvas has been a great tool for distance learning and learning from feedback I’ve received on assignments. In addition, Google Calendar helps me organize my time, while Google Scholar gives me access to research articles I can use for assignments and to research topics of interest.
